Kirin
If you’ve ever wandered the streets of London in search of a cozy yet authentic Chinese dining experience, Kirin might just be the hidden gem you’ve missed. Tucked away at 10 College Hill, London EC4R 2RP, Kirin is the kind of place that doesn’t scream for attention-but rewards you handsomely when you step inside.
This spot has been making waves among London’s Chinese food lovers, and it’s not hard to see why. Whether you're dropping by for a solo dinner, grabbing a quick takeaway, or planning a relaxed meal with friends, Kirin fits the mood perfectly. It's known for being especially popular during lunch and dinner hours, and if you’re someone who appreciates good tea pairings with dim sum, this is your haven.
Let’s talk about the food. Because at Kirin, the menu does all the talking. The Peking Duck? Crisp skin, succulent meat, served traditionally with pancakes and hoisin sauce-it's easily one of the standout dishes. And the Dim Sum? Fresh, handmade, with an impressive range from delicate shrimp har gow to juicy pork siu mai.
If you’re leaning toward lighter plates, don’t skip the Deep Sea Scallops with Garlic Scallion and Rice Noodles in Sauce. It's delicate but flavorful, and a clear favorite among regulars. Other notables include the Pan Fried Dumplings, perfectly crispy on the outside, and the rich, comforting Beef Brisket, slow-cooked until meltingly tender.
Vegetarian? No worries-Kirin’s got you. Their Chinese Broccoli stir-fried in garlic is simple but elegant, and their vegetarian dim sum options make sure no one’s left out. The kitchen also plates up Pakora (yes, a surprising but delightful fusion touch), and seasonal dishes you won't find on every menu in the city.
Now, Kirin isn’t trying to be something it's not. Accessibility-wise, there’s no wheelchair-accessible parking or toilet, which is worth noting for those who may need these features. But what it lacks in accessibility, it makes up for with attentive service, a well-curated drink menu (yes, they serve wine, beer, spirits, cocktails, and even late-night snacks), and a vibe that’s both unpretentious and inviting.
One of the lesser-known perks? Kirin offers no-contact delivery for those nights when you’re curled up at home craving great Chinese food. The takeaway and dine-in services are just as reliable, and if you're planning a special occasion-say, a birthday dinner-they can whip up custom treats, including a Birthday Cake tailored to your request.
Many diners praise the tea selection here-it’s extensive and expertly brewed, making it a perfect companion to their robust meals. If you’re someone who enjoys a meal as an experience, not just a pit stop, Kirin delivers that with subtle elegance.
While London boasts its fair share of Chinese restaurants, Kirin sets itself apart with a balance of authenticity, creativity, and comfort. It’s the kind of place where you can order a plate of Szechuan Chicken that lights up your taste buds or sip a quiet cup of oolong while watching the world go by from your corner table.
If you’re wondering whether Kirin leans more traditional or modern, the answer is both. It manages to feel homey yet elevated, rooted in classic Cantonese flavors but unafraid to experiment. Add in the relaxed ambiance and generous portion sizes, and you've got a restaurant that doesn’t just serve food-it serves memorable experiences.
Reviews
My family and I were trying to find an authentic Chinese restaurant in the Bank area and stumbled upon Kirin Chinese. The restaurant has quite an extensive menu with lots of different options for seafood, meats, and vegetables. The restaurant filled up quite quickly for lunch but they still managed to bring out our food very quickly. The servers were very friendly as well. The interior is decorated nicely and there are also private rooms that you can book for events and parties. We found the food to be fairly salty, which is normal considering food in London is generally quite salty. If this isn’t your personal preference, you might want to request that they use less salt.
Fancy decorations, the lavatory is really pretty and clean. Unfortunately food wasn't great, we have ordered 4 dishes, 2 of them are good, other 2 are disaster. Good 2 dishes: chill crab and duck & Mushroom fried rice, now is crab season, the yolk is fabulous, fried rice got that nice and tasty wok hay. Bad 2 dishes: Roast meat San Pin and Strawberry Pork ribs, Roast meat is super dull, almost has no flavor, strawberry ribs were using frozen ribs, and was unbalanced. Price is about £30 per person if you don't order alcohol.
Not sure why the average reviews - quiet atmosphere (couldn’t hear the karaoke unless someone opened the door), attentive service, good decor (candles, flowers and well folded napkins on everything table), decent food. The food is slightly on the pricier side but it’s in the middle of the city so understandable.
Visiting on the first day of the Lunar New Year. The restaurant has quite a few large tables, and only smaller tables available for walk ins. The vibe was good, service was rather cold but efficient. The reason why I gave a fair rating on service was because of the plates and chopsticks, with spoons on requests. To be honest, this restaurant doesn't offer an extensive dim sum list, so I don't see the point for doing that. This setting is also not convenient to eat. Everything we ordered, however, was delicious. Fragrant fried rice with duck meat and mushrooms, pan fried dumplings and cured meat with chili sauce were all impressive. All in all, the experience was good. A nice place to enjoy a cosy discussion if you happen to be around the area.
The flavor of the ginger dressing is superb. Sometimes there is no roast duck at noon. The roast duck tastes delicious, and the duck soup is an authentic duck soup with tofu and salt. The beef tofu chicken tasted good and the grunge chicken was also tasty but not nutty. The macaroni with Malay sauce is delicious. The lobster tastes average. The service was excellent.
